G322: AUDIENCES AND INSTITUTIONS (FILM)

THE INDIAN DOCTOR

1. The soundtrack functions in telling us how the Indian Doctor feels about the place that he is travelling to. We see the train travel past different places in Wales for example past a bridge, whilst the doctor has a smile on his face. The lyrics of the song are saying "half way to paradise" suggesting that where the doctor is going is a perfect place and the lyrics to the song and his facial expression shows this point too.

2. Whose viewpoint is the audience made to share, and how?
The audience is made to share the doctors and his wives viewpoint. We can see both of their expressions and how they feel on where they are travelling. We can see what they are both seeing which is valleys of just grass and trees. We can see that the doctor is happy and excited to be here as he stares, ecstatic, out the window. On the other hand his wife is looking down on the place as she points her nose up. She is not facing the window in the same way that she is suggesting that she doesn't want to look at where she is travelling to. She is disgraced by it.

3. How is Indian ethnicity constructed? How is the Welsh community represented?

4. How are Prem and Kamini constructed as outsiders?

Their body posture and language  suggests that they are outsiders as they are searching around looking. They have no idea where to go from here. When Prem suggests that they walk Kamini is baffled and says "I'm not a donkey." They have come from a much wealthier part of India than it is in Wales.

5. What does the editing (shot reverse shot; framing, reaction shot) contribute to the representation?
The shot reverse shot shows the reaction on the little boys face. He expression is shocked and confused. This contributes to the representation as it shows them as outsiders and as if they are unusual. It suggests that this boy has never seen anyone that is Indian and of that colour before. It is used to show us why the boy looks so shocked as the couple come over the hill.

6. Mise-en-scene: how are Prem and Kamini positioned as outsiders through their clothes?
Prem and Kamini are constructed as outsiders firstly due to their clothing. Prem is dressed in a white three piece suit which is extremely formal and posh for the Welsh Valleys. Prem is also wearing a top hat. The fact that he is wearing white suggests that he is wealthy enough to have someone clean his clothes for him. His coat is also matching the colour of Kaminis beige jacket showing that they are wearing the same colour and are therefore matching. Kamini is wearing a sahri. This is firstly a very exotic style of clothing as it shows off skin. This is not the type of thing that you would wear to Wales. It is also of bright, vibrant red colour with golden tassles around the outside.

7: Editing: what do the clips from the contemporary film 'The Millionairess' contribute

 to the representation of Asians?

9. Comment on the arrival of Prem and Kamini in the village hall during the screening. How is the 2012 audience meant to understand this scene?
The audience is meant to think that it is an extremely awkward situation as the couple walk into a film that is quite racist towards Indian. The fact that the couple suddenly walk in on this puts the Welsh miners in quite a bad light as they are laughing at this doctor on the movie who is pretending to be INdian but isn't really. The reaction of the couple isn't anything huge however Kamini does look slightly shocked at the video.

10. How is the Welsh community represented?
When the couple arrive at the town the Welsh community are in complete and utter shock as they all turn around with wide mouths or narrow, confused eyes at the couple. Although they know that the couple is going to be of a different ethnicity everyone turns around to get a look at them. They are represented in different ways as some are accepting of the culture clash whereas others do not want to accept it and do not speak to the couple. However others do try and make conversation suggesting that they are open for change.

Skyfall – UK Big Budget

Skyfall is the 23rd James Bond film and is an example of a large budget British film, it is an excellent example of a film franchise and is also useful to discuss the role of stars, product placement and the role of soundtracks to promote films.
Skyfall was produced by Eon Productions and distributed by MGM and Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2012. The film is the third Bond film that has starred Daniel Craig as James Bond and it was directed by Sam Mendes. For a film series to reach 23 and still be hugely popular is testament to the almost fail-safe formula that Bond films tend to follow. Including elements such as exotic locations, attractive actors, exciting action sequences, and adherence to a narrative structure that never truly threatens Bonds omnipotence.
Role of Stars
It is possible to argue that the true star of any Bond film is the character as opposed to the actor that plays him and essentially this is true. As spectators watching a Bond film we are watching the character as opposed to the actor, true spectators will often argue about who has been the best James Bond and once an actor has finished his run of films there is intense media speculation about who will play him next. Though Daniel Craig can now be considered a ‘star’ is that due to his role as Bond or was he a ‘star’ before?
Equally the choice of Director is always interesting as well respected director Sam Mendes was the director of Skyfall and his previous films have tended to be drama based, with the exception of Road to Perdition which featured a number of action set pieces. This could be seen as an attempt to add more elements of drama than the previous Bond formula allowed for, it may also be an attempt to widen the audience by using a director which would attract a different audience.

Product Placement
As Skyfall was distributed by Sony it may not be surprising to note that James Bond uses Sony electronic items such as a phone, laptop and other electrical devices. The cars used are all made by companies ultimately owned by Ford and his watch is an Omega Seamaster. Also in Skyfall he has swapped his Martini for a Heineken, for the character to make this swap cost the Dutch brewers £28.2 million. This type of product placement helps to fund the making of the film as well as provide the company with a captive market and a subtle way of promoting their product.
Soundtrack
Another element to the marketing and promotion of Skyfall was the use of a theme song, in this case one sung by Adele. The choice of Adele suited both parties as the Bond theme is often sung by an established and very popular artist and it provides a massive amount of exposure whilst it also allows the film to be associated with a younger and more current star. The music video will help to promote the film and build a buzz up surrounding the films release. The song was nominated for a range of awards which helped to keep the film in the press and therefore to continue to generate an audience for it and build up anticipation for the DVD release.
Overall a large budget film such as Skyfall needs to use a wide variety of marketing and promotional techniques to help try and recoup the cost of the production and try to generate as much revenue as possible.
